Memoirs
A vivid description of growing up in London's East End
The Boundary Housing Estate is situated in the north- west corner of Bethnal Green in London's East End behind the church of St. Leonard, Shoreditch.
The Day My Way Ended
A mainly factual account of life in a Japanese prisoner of war camp on the day the second world war ended.
Much of my recollection as a prisoner of war is hazy, but the events of that day stand out in my mind as clearly as the Singapore sun shone on the beach where they took place.
It began like any other day.
London 1936
An account of queuing for opera and the theatre in 1936
It is a little before six in the morning. A cold, damp Saturday with a hint of autumnal London fog. Tonight the Sadlers Wells Opera Company is performing the Marriage of Figaro.
Cousin Jack
Partly embellished description of Cousin Jack
There is some doubt as to whether Cousin Jack was actually my cousin, or at best perhaps one several times removed and sometimes I thought not removed far enough.
Christmas Story
An Australian take on Christmas Carols
The festive season, time of love;
Tinsel angels strung above.
Concert Piece
Tongue tied at a concert
They had arrived early and there was only a handful of people in the hall. He liked to allow plenty of time especially to a concert. It was a typical Melbourne showery autumn day and she had been reluctant to leave the house but he had persuaded her.
Street Scene
A hoarding hides more than it reveals
Across the street, the hoarding
Offensive, obscures the garden
Proclaims its melancholy message
Easy Money
A first love
I was fourteen when father died and fifteen when I first fell madly in love. This juxtaposition is not as arbitrary as it may seem.
